ICS Journal
Web magazine that features everyday life at ICS.
ICS uses the tutorial system to nuture creativity. Ideas of students that become the core of creativity, are individually guided by tutors who are professional designers.
Most tutors have professional experience internationally. From these tutors who know the forefront of the design market, students learn various ways to create new ideas, construct design forms, and to communicate their design proposals.
ICS was founded in 1963 by architects led by Takeo Amito and Junpei Nakamura as 'Interior Center School', the first vocational school specializing in interior design. This was the time before the word 'Interior' became generally recognized by the public.
In 1994 the school renames itself to the current name 'ICS College of Arts', and develops internationally through partnership with university in the UK. Students from world wide came to study at ICS, as international diversity is now one of the feature of ICS.
ICS is equipped with a professional workshop. Students experience a full scale making that is done in the actual field. Practical training include fabrication of furnitures, construction of timber frame structure, floor finishing and plaster works, as well as installation of lighting equipments.
The workshop is very important for both students who aspire to become a craftsman and a designer. A design can be magnificent but will not mean anything if it can not be realized to be built form. Students are encouraged to use their hands and body along with their brains to come up with a design proposal that is both creative and realistic.
Learning practical design works through collaborative projects given from a specific company. The theme of projects include designing new products, etc. Students are exposed to real life projects which help them develop their practical abilities.
Through partnership with Middlesex University in London, students can transfer or proceed to study at Interior programs at Middlesex, BA or MA. This enables students to continue their academic career internationally.
